The weekend Buffalo Women’s Rugby Club had been dreaming of had finally arrived. Sitting in the locker room of the Chicago Blaze Rugby Club, they listened intently to their coach as the team prepared for the biggest game of their season so far, Midwest Conference Finals. Jerry Hann instructed BWRC to above all, play for each other. The conditions were nothing new to the Buffalonians. Cleats were clogged with ice and mud, fingers were slow and cold, and snow continued to fall throughout the match.
Scylla kicked off with a deep ball to Buffalo’s forwards. The play was surprisingly clean despite conditions and tackles were hard from both sides. Scylla player, Abigail Williams, took the first try without a conversion. Buffalo was unfazed and it showed. They answered with a try off the kickoff. Field captain, Colleen Benack, kicked the ball deep and BWRC regained possession as Erika Huard smashed into the try zone to tie it up. Nicole Faulise looked to put Buffalo ahead with the conversion but without luck.
Flyhalf, Red Huber, saw her next opportunity with a kick to the far right corner. Off the first bounce, Emily Stefanski took the ball in full stride. Scylla found a way to tie her up but not before she offloaded to her support. Captain, Jenna Hutzler, weaved her way through the remaining players and put Buffalo ahead with a try placed by the uprights. Faulise added two points in the effort. Nearing the end of the first half, Buffalo found themselves with a penalty option within Scylla’s 22 meter. Faulise contributed another three points with a successful penalty kick.
Buffalo kicked off to a reinvigorated Scylla after half. Scylla tried to shake up Buffalo’s defense but with little effect until BWRC prop, Asha Glorioso, was sin binned. A devastating situation for any pack, Buffalo shifted players around to fill her place. Scylla took advantage of their extra player and scored almost immediately down the sideline. The conversion was not successful.
Buffalo Women’s Rugby Club left victorious with a score of 15-10 and earned the title of DII Midwest Champions! The season will continue in the Spring as the team prepares for quarterfinals on May 18th, 2019.
Congratulations to Erika Huard and Red Huber, our selections for man of the match! Erika was spectacular in the lineouts, stealing and securing the ball for us with every opportunity and Red was flawless at coordinating our offensive attacks and leading the team with her expertise.
